Drum Lessons for the Hobbyist and Serious Musician
The Ontario College of Percussion and Music offers high quality drum lessons with professional Toronto drum teachers. Boasting the best lessons in Toronto, OCOPM provides private drum lessons with experienced instructors and performers Robin Boers, and Jay Burak. Our spacious drum studios are equipped with two drumsets and set up with modern audio equipment to create a realistic playing experience for our students. We will take you step by step from the basics of drumming to beyond playing your favourite songs and styles. Rock, jazz and fusion drumming are the order of the day here at OCOPM. Our approach as teachers is to help you acheive your goals on the drumset, whether drumming is your career or your favourite way to relax.
The music school is conveniently located in the Leaside / East York neighbourhood of Toronto, on Laird Drive and is accessible by TTC from Eglinton Avenue East.
Private Drum Lessons and the Part-Time Program
Drum lessons are available for the hobbyist and professional on a weekly basis at the school's location in Toronto. We provide focussed lessons for the serious minded student while also creating a relaxing atmosphere for the hobbyist. Our part-time program can be tailored to meet your needs, whether you want to learn to play drums along to favourite songs and with a band, or if you are a professionally minded drummer seeking an intensive program in any and all styles of drumming.
The school offers instrument rentals to students at competitive rates. Available rental instruments include entry-level and upgraded drumsets, acoustic and electric guitar, and electric basses.
Gift certificates are available for our 30 minute, 45 minute and 60 minute music lessons. Certificates can be purchased at the school and are available in any quantity. Gift recipients can schedule lessons with us at their convenience.
Hobbyist and Professional Music Programs
The drum school has a history of training students to become high calibre musicians, proficient in current styles of drumming. Weekly drum lessons for the hobbyist and a full-time professional program of music and drumset study allow us to provide a program of study most suited to the needs of our students. The drumset curriculum includes:
- Classical Drumming, Snare Technique and Rhythm Reading
- Rock Drumming
- Funk and Fusion Drumming
- Modern Approaches to Jazz Drumming
The drumset program follows a course of method books taking the student from novice to professional at a pace set by the student. Rhythm reading and chart reading abilities are developed alongside technical proficiency on the drumset.
Drummers with an established skill set can continue to study advanced techniques, including ostinatos, artificial groupings and polyrhythms, and their application to contemporary styles of music.
Students of the full-time professional program are required to study Percussion, Bass Guitar, Piano, Music Theory, and Harmony.
OCOPM provides workshops to drumset students interested in honing their playing skills with a band. Optional workshops are hosted by one of our experienced drum teachers and a band of professional musicians. Rock and jazz drumming workshops are run in four skill levels, each of which is four sessions long.
Between July and August, OCOPM runs a weekly rock school. Drum students have the opportunity to play with professional musicians and guitar and bass students, learning to play as a band and having a tonne of fun. Similar to the drumset workshops, each class at the rock school is two hours in length and hosted by one of our senior teachers.
